Saving the Lives of Pets and People

Help Us Help Pets that Help People...

Mission

Survivors for Strays is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, animal rescue organization dedicated to saving animals that are homeless, neglected, abused, or about to die in an open access animal shelter. Animals feel joy, pain, grief, and love. We are determined to help people be mindful of that and learn to value these lives to always treat them compassionately as part of the family. We are committed to providing a safe haven for those furry family members that are in dire domestic abuse situations and need a temporary home in order for domestic abuse victims to leave safely and with peace of mind.

Who We Are

We are Survivors & Thrivers of sexual abuse, intimate partner abuse, domestic violence, cancer, and other traumas. We are here because our furry family members or other animals helped us get through our personal ordeals, and we want to give back. It is OUR turn to save innocent, precious lives like the ones who saved us.

We are friends and family members of Survivors & Thrivers. We believe in the Human-Animal Bond and will do everything we can to support this Mission.

Who are we? We are YOU

LIFESAVERS

Be a Survivors for Strays Lifesaver!  Here’s how:

FOSTER – When you open your heart and home to foster with Survivors for Strays, you are directly saving a life that would otherwise perish.  You are part of a journey that is transformational for both you and the lives we save together.

ADOPT –  When you adopt from Survivors for Strays, you are not only gaining a wonderful new furry family member, but you are saving a life by opening up a space for us to take in another life in need.

VOLUNTEER – When you give of your time, expertise, and services, you are making an incredible impact on these precious lives.  You are saving lives by meeting many of the day-to-day needs that are essential in allowing Survivors for Strays to exist, operate, and grow.

DONATE – When you financially support Survivors for Strays, your generosity is literally saving lives by providing medical care, food, and enriching assistance.  Without you, animals die.

GUARDIAN ANGELS

Be a Survivors for Strays Guardian Angel!

Our Guardian Angels Program is unique and very special.  Guardian Angels are people who open their hearts and homes to long-term foster the furry family members of victims of domestic abuse that must leave their unsafe environment in order to Survive.  Many other organizations have a Program to help, but theirs are only 30 days.  After that, some offer an extended 30 days.  It is extremely difficult for someone to get back on their feet or at least to a place they can safely sustain themselves, their children, and their pets.  After 60 days, those other organizations will adopt them out.  New Survivors will lose their furry family members.  As Survivors, we feel that is tragic and contributes to more trauma, as this is when they are needed the most!  They provide emotional and psychological support that is beneficial and crucial to the health and well-being of both the human family and furry family members themselves.

Guardian Angels are Saving Lives

The lives of pets – 71% of domestic violence victims reported that their abusers had threatened, injured, or killed their pets (according to the Humane Society of the United States).

The lives of people – 48% of respondents in a Battered Women’s Justice Project study refused to leave an abusive situation because they had nowhere to take their pets.  Domestic abuse results in at least 1,300 deaths each year in the United States (according to Emory School of Medicine).

As Survivors and Supporters of Survivors, our experience and dedication will inspire others to volunteer and contribute.  And we hope it will provide courage to those who need to take that life-saving first step from Victim to Survivor.
